Why Is My Child Struggling to Read?

One of the most common questions parents ask is, "Why is my child struggling to learn to read?" It can be heartbreaking to watch your child work so hard while reading seems to come effortlessly to other children. Reading is one of the most complex skills humans learn and is a relatively recent invention in human history. The foundations for reading begin long before a child opens a book, and our brains must build entirely new networks by connecting visual, auditory, language, and meaning centers into one coordinated system in order to read.

Although all parts of the brain are typically fully developed at birth, they are not yet fully connected. Throughout infancy and childhood, the brain is constantly building new neural pathways through the growth of nerve fibers and the process of myelination—the formation of a protective fatty coating around nerve fibers that allows information to travel more quickly and efficiently, much like insulation around electrical wires.

This process unfolds gradually over many years. Before children are ready to master reading, their brains are busy laying the neurological foundations that will later support literacy, attention, coordination, memory, language, and executive functioning.

How Movement Helps Build the Brain

Nature has provided an extraordinary developmental sequence for building these foundations.

Rudolf Steiner described young children as "sensory sponges." From birth onward, babies learn through movement and sensory exploration. Stretching their arms and legs, rolling, crawling, rocking on hands and knees, walking, babbling, grasping objects, and exploring the world through touch are not random activities—they are important developmental milestones that stimulate the growing nervous system.

These early experiences provide rich sensory input that supports the development and strengthening of neural connections. During the first years of life, children accomplish remarkable feats almost entirely through self-directed exploration. They learn to crawl, walk, speak, balance, coordinate both sides of the body, and interact with the world around them. These experiences help prepare the body for increasingly complex learning, including reading.

Within Waldorf education, pioneers such as Audrey McAllen, Sally Goddard Blythe, and Jeff Turner have emphasized the importance of these early movement patterns. Their work suggests that strengthening the body's sensory and motor foundations can make later academic learning—including reading and writing—more accessible for many children.

Why So Many Children Are Struggling Today

Today's children are growing up in a very different environment than previous generations.

Many children have fewer opportunities for free movement and outdoor play. Increased screen time, environmental stressors, pregnancy or birth complications, chronic stress, and certain medical or developmental conditions can all influence early neurological development. These factors vary greatly from child to child, and in many cases, they are completely outside a parent's control.

As parents, it is easy to wonder if we have somehow caused our child's struggles. The answer is almost always no. Instead, many children arrive at school with neurological foundations that are still developing. When the underlying systems that support attention, coordination, sensory processing, and language are immature, learning to read can require far more effort than expected.

This does not mean a child cannot learn to read. It means they may benefit from support that strengthens these developmental foundations alongside individualized reading instruction presented in an imaginative way that engages their natural desire to learn.

Looking Beneath the Symptoms

Traditional reading instruction often focuses on teaching letters, sounds, spelling patterns, and decoding skills. These are all important pieces of learning to read. However, for some children, academic instruction alone does not address the underlying developmental challenges that make reading difficult in the first place.

Researchers, occupational therapists, educational specialists, and developmental practitioners—including Dr. Harald Blomberg, developer of Blomberg Rhythmic Movement Training (BRMT)—have explored how movement, rhythm, sensory experiences, and the repetition of early developmental patterns may support neurological organization in some children. These approaches are intended to complement effective literacy instruction by helping strengthen the brain systems that reading depends upon.
