Why Is Movement So Important for Learning to Read and Write?

At first glance, activities such as bean bag games, balancing, crawling, clapping, walking patterns, or drawing large forms on paper can seem unrelated to reading and writing. Yet for generations, Waldorf remedial educators have found that these seemingly simple activities can have a profound effect on a child's ability to learn.

Among the pioneers of this work was Audrey McAllen, a Waldorf remedial teacher whose methods have helped thousands of children around the world. Her approach was based on Rudolf Steiner's lectures on the physical and spiritual development of children and on careful observation of how children grow into their bodies before they grow into abstract thinking.

Learning Begins in the Body

Modern neuroscience confirms that learning is not simply a mental activity. Reading and writing depend on many parts of the brain working together, and these brain networks develop gradually through movement, sensory experiences, and interaction with the world.

Long before a child learns to recognize letters, they are developing an internal map of their own body. They discover where their hands and feet are, how the two sides of the body work together, how to balance, and how to move through space. These early experiences become the foundation for later skills such as eye tracking, handwriting, reading across a page, and organizing thoughts on paper.

Steiner described this beautifully by pointing to one of the greatest achievements of early childhood: standing upright.

Standing Upright Changes Everything

According to Rudolf Steiner, the moment a child stands and begins to walk marks a profound stage in human development. Walking is much more than a physical milestone. Through movement, children gradually discover the three dimensions of space and orient themselves within it. They develop an inner sense of up and down, left and right, front and back.

This growing awareness allows children to create an internal picture of their own bodies—a kind of inner body map that supports balance, coordination, and later, academic learning.

Steiner also described a close relationship between walking, speech, and thinking. As children learn to move confidently through the world, they also develop language, imagination, and the capacity to relate socially to others. In this view, movement is not separate from thinking—it is one of its earliest foundations.

The Importance of an Inner Body Map

Audrey McAllen expanded upon Steiner's ideas through decades of work with children experiencing learning difficulties. She observed that many struggling learners had not fully developed this inner sense of spatial orientation.

When children have difficulty knowing where they are in space, they may also struggle with skills such as:

  • Letter reversals
  • Reading across a page
  • Organizing handwriting
  • Sequencing ideas
  • Balance and coordination
  • Remembering directions
  • Sustaining attention

Rather than viewing these challenges simply as academic problems, McAllen understood them as signs that certain stages of development needed additional support.

She believed that movement could help strengthen these foundations—even after the early years of childhood had passed.

Why Movement Comes Before Academics

Steiner taught that through movement, the physical body gradually becomes integrated with the child's developing life forces. McAllen described this as the process through which a child's "body geography" becomes established—an inner awareness of the body's organization in space.

Ideally, this process unfolds naturally during early childhood through abundant opportunities to crawl, climb, balance, skip, throw, catch, explore nature, and engage in imaginative play.

However, some children encounter obstacles along the way. Birth complications, illness, sensory processing differences, retained primitive reflexes, chronic stress, reduced opportunities for free movement, or other developmental challenges can interrupt this process.

When these foundational experiences are incomplete, the body may not automatically develop the stable organization that supports later academic learning.

McAllen believed that children often benefit from individually tailored movement activities that gently revisit these developmental stages. Rather than forcing academic skills before the foundations are secure, remedial work seeks to strengthen the underlying capacities upon which reading, writing, and mathematics depend.

Why Modern Children May Need More Support

Audrey McAllen also observed that modern childhood places increasing demands on children at younger ages. Academic expectations often arrive before children's sensory, motor, and neurological systems have fully matured.

She suggested that many children are asked to direct their attention toward intellectual tasks before the bodily foundations for those tasks are fully established. Instead of allowing movement to naturally support emotional, social, and cognitive development, children may spend long periods sitting still, looking at screens, or focusing on abstract learning before they are developmentally ready.

Her work reminds us that movement is not a break from learning—it is one of the ways young children build the capacity to learn.

Building Strong Foundations

This is why movement plays such an important role in Waldorf remedial education. Activities involving rhythm, balance, crossing the midline, spatial awareness, form drawing, bean bag exercises, games, and purposeful movement are designed to strengthen the body's organization while supporting attention, memory, language, and academic readiness.

For many parents, these activities may initially seem unrelated to reading or writing. Yet they are intended to strengthen the developmental foundations upon which literacy is built.

Every child follows a unique developmental path. Sometimes those foundations develop naturally, and sometimes they need a little extra support. Audrey McAllen's work reminds us that before we ask children to master symbols on a page, we must first help them feel at home within their own bodies.

When movement strengthens the body's organization, learning often becomes more coordinated, more confident, and more joyful. Rather than simply teaching children to read and write, Waldorf remedial education seeks to nurture the whole child, creating the conditions in which those skills can emerge with greater ease.
